The 2009 racing season has come to an end… The #36 MCL Team had a wild ride this past week…

Thursday night was Fan Appreciation night at WIR and we had close to 40 Late Models on hand to end the season with a bang… Free Beer, corn and ice cream in the pits after the races and a DJ cranking out some tunes… A good time was had by all…

We qualified well with a 19.7 lap time putting us solid in the show, one last time… If you remember back a week we were in a heated point battle with #18 Robb Vanderloop… we entered the evening 14 points back… we gained 2 points in qualifying beating them by 2 spots… Onto the heat race… we battled HARD with the #18 car and couldn't complete the pass cleanly… we finished 1 spot behind them in the 4th position… losing 1 point…

Onto the feature where all positions are at least 2 points or better… we charged hard from the 13th starting spot, dodged a few wrecks and found ourself up to 5th when the yellows flew once again… This time, lady luck shined on us… The #18 had hit the wall and was out of the race… we raced hard the remainder of the race, but fell back to the 8th spot at the checkers…

We were on pins and needles as the points were tallied… WE MADE IT!!!!! We passed him by 2 points… Our FIRST TOP 5 in FRRC Points!!!! I've attached them below… I've also attached the RWB Points… Top 5's in BOTH series… WOW!!! What a year!!!

So with a smile on our faces we ventured North to the Norway Speedway for our 3rd ASA Series race ever… We had high hopes being a track we were comfortable on… Practice went well… we were on old tires and were making times fast enough to qualify in by time… but then the motor changed pitch and sounded nasty… I shut it down and the MCL Pit Crew went to work… they found that a header pipe for our exhaust system had actually sheared off and was hanging in the cluster… they had to pull off the header (which is VERY hot at this point) and with a little help from long time friend #23 Bruce White (welder by trade) we got the pipe fixed and back on the car in less than 20 minutes!!!

Qualifying went fairly well… we were a bit tight, but that didn't stop us from making the show by time!!! Very exciting to be 3 for 3 in ASA action… The heat race was a nightmare… we went the wrong way with some shock adjustments and we quickly faded from the front to the back…

So we made more changes and we were VERY good in the beginning of the feature… hot laps we had a solid feeling car and to start the race everyone was bunched up, but we were climbing up the back of the competition just waiting for a opening… well some cars in front us us tangled and spun bunching up the field on lap 5 of the 100 lap race… we took a hit to the front right tire damaging some suspension, forcing us to get a tow truck and retire for the evening. It was very disappointing as we thought we had a solid top 10 car… Frustrating way to end the season.

BUT… It was a GREAT season overall… Highs and Lows no doubt, but 2009 was another step in the right direction and we gained 5 spots in both series point standings!!! All of us at Tom Gee Motorsports want to thank all our family, friends and sponsors for being such devoted fans throughout the year!!!

Hope to see everyone over the Fall and Winter…. Otherwise we will be in touch once 2010 kicks off in spring!!!

This is the LAST week of racing for the #36 MCL Racing Team… Sad but true… Its been our BEST season to date and we plan on ending it on a high note!

We have our final night at WIR this Thursday night… Fan Appreciation Night!!! Free Beer and corn roast in the pits after the races courtesy of Valley Liquor…. Free ice cream treats and checkered flags for the kids courtesy of Lamers… Should be a great time!!! Be sure to come to the track for the last event of the summer at WIR!!!

The Norway Cars and Stars will also be present… their season wrapped up last week, so we setup and open invitation to have them come down and have some fun on the half mile… Roughly 10 Norway teams have already pre-registered and will be at WIR this week to tackle the BIG track!!!

We are currently in the 6th position in the overall FRRC point standings, only 14 points out of the top 5… VERY possible to slip back into the top 5 this week and end the season on a high note… (We finished 10th last season)

After Thursday, the MCL Pit Crew goes to work one last time and converts the car over to the Norway Setup… Sunday 9/6 we head to the Norway Speedway for our final event of the season there… it’s a BIG one… The Norway ASA race… 100 Lapper!!! The best in the Midwest will be there to tackle the challenging 1/3 mile… Not to mention the #36 team in their FINAL event of the season… It will once again be a tough show to make, but we will give it our best and have some fun along the way. RACING BEGINS AT 6:00!!!!

Hope to see you all there!!! Should be a great way to end the season!

MCLWell the Red, White and Blue Series is in the books… MCL Night was a HUGE success…

We qualified well.. The car was a tick tight on the 4 new tires… we had a 19.7 laptime putting us 12th overall and solidly in the show.

No heat races being the Blue Race.

In the 75 lap feature the #36 MCL Car jumped out front to the early lead. We were all smiles as we pulled away from the field… slowly but surely, the MCL Car opened up the gap on 2nd place to over a straight away! We led the first 69 of the 75 lap race… then the dredded yellow flag came out… we lost our HUGE race winning lead and were forced to double up. On the restart the car to the outside of us chopped down on us in turn 1 and we lost control, slid up the track back into him and we both spun out…

We were forced by rule to go to the back of the pack… Luckily we had lapped every car up to the 10th place… we ended the race there…

If there was good news, it would be that we put on one heck of a show for all our MCL fans in the pavillion… our spin was right in front of them (if that's a good thing, I don't know..????LOL) So all the action was right at their fingertips… I wish we could have sealed the deal and WON the race but it didn't quite work out that way…

We did end the Red, White and Blue on a solid note… Our VERY FIRST top 5 in Late Model Points… we finished out in the 5th place overall.

Our performance did also help us in the Thursday night points.. Boosting us back up to 6th place only 4 points out of the top 5 with only 3 events remaining! We are going to work very hard those remaining 3 events to take home our first top 5 in FRRC points as well...

Attatched are some pictures of the Blue Race presented by MCL Industries… Enjoy!

ASA MidwestOur busy racing week has come to a close… lots of racing action and an excellent corn roast at Lake Park Pub to top off the week!

Thursday the #36 MCL racing team headed to WIR for our normal Thursday Night program. We qualified fairly well overall in the 8th spot. We started in the last row of the heat and climbed up into the 3rd place by the time it was done…

The feature was bitter sweet… we worked out way out to the early lead and led the first half the race… we were WAAAAY out front at the half way point and were hoping for no yellows…. The #45 Jeff VanOudenhoven got into second and slowly ran us down… being that far out front, it was in both our best interested if we just roll out of the way and follow him for the remainder of the race rather than let the rest of the field catch us. Dropping to second we tailed the 45 car for another 10 laps or so just clipping along hoping for a solid 2nd place finish… But a yellow came out… after the yellow we were running strong in the top 3… But that’s where lady luck ran out again.. Battery failure took over and the motor sputtered down the straight aways… Brand new to start the year… It failed and we dropped to 10th in the remaining 3 laps…

So onto Norway we went on Friday… much of the same… uncontrollable disaster…. LOL

We had a GREAT car in practice… 2nd overall behind Jamie Iverson… Then we put on the new tires for scuff… That’s where it went south… we ended up qualifying fairly well in the 8th spot overall again, but had little to no traction off the corner… It was very strange that the new tires were WORSE than our old practice tires… We tailed the pack in both the heat and the feature ending up 14th overall… We pulled off early with 15 laps remaining in the event. We were not competitive and didn’t want to further risk crashing the car.

After digging into the tire issue we found the problem was the used Right Rear was WORN OUT… Our 2 tires sat in the impound trailer since early june.. So we've concluded that either the 2 months in the heat soaked trailer wrecked them… OR… someone was nice enough to race them for us once or twice in our absence… Either way, we had a tough go of it at Norway…

All that aside… we are VERY happy that the car handled well the past 2 events last week at WIR… Perfect timing as THIS THURSDAY is MCL Night at WIR…. Also being the final leg of the Red, White & Blue Series… The Blue Race!!

We are poised to take the win in front of our Primary Sponsor!!! Move up in the RWB Points and hopefully take home a nice trophy for our efforts!!

Finally, I've attached a few pics from the Tues ASA race at WIR...

See you at the track!!!

Dixieland 150Yesterday (Tues) was the ASA Midwest Tour Race at WIR… We had a blast running with "the best in the Midwest"… Those guys are FAST! Kevin Harvick and Ron Hornaday were on hand…

Our primary goal for the night was to make the show by time…. Well we did that on our FIRST lap of qualifying… the second lap was just bonus at that point. We had our fastest qualifying time of the year with a 19.600 lap time. Putting us 6th overall.

The heat race was fairly uneventful… we stayed out of trouble and made the 10 laps checking our setup…. We came home 5th.

Onto the 150 lap main event… The Dixieland 150.

We started out kind of flat… they ran us over for the first few laps and we dropped as far back as 16th-18th I believe in the 29 car field… but as we started to build some heat and pressure in the tires and I found a groove that the car worked well in, we started holding our own and eventually working our way back toward the front. Around lap 60 of the first 75 lap segment, we lost front brakes to overwhelming heat… it boiled the fluid and the pedal went to the floor in the corners… we were stuck in 12th place till the break…

ASA gave us a 10 minute break to fuel the cars and make adjustments… NO new tires were allowed…. We found that our fuse on the brake blower fans had burnt out and was an easy fix. The crew bled brakes and made adjustments while the driver tried to cool down and get some fluids… Back in the car we were ready for another 75 laps. The car was better and the brakes had returned.. So forward we went… We marched all the way up to the 7th position with ONLY 2 laps to go… Lap 148 we got a small shot in the rear bumper off of turn 4 and we lost control down the front stretch… keeping it off the wall and the other competitors, I gathered it back up and pressed on… We fell back in line in the 11th position and finished out the last lap 1 spot shy of a top 10….

Overall we had a lot of fun and were fairly competitive with the big dogs… We learned a lot about our setup once again and I got a lot of laps at WIR. Above all, we "kept the nose on it" and didn't crash. We have a very busy week this week!

Thursday 8/6 WIR
Friday 8/7 Norway (Auto Value 50 Lap Championship)
Saturday 8/8 Lake Park Pub Corn Roast

Also thanks to Mike Engels for snagging the attached picture below from the appleton post crescent article about the race…

Hope to see you there!!!!

July 24, 2009

A night of highs and lows for the #36 MCL racing team. We qualified solid into the show in the 12 position. That was the ideal position putting us on the POLE for the feature.

The heat race we struggled on the outside lane and ended up 4th by the time we got into line.

In the feature we ran in the 2nd spot for the first half of the race and then drifted a bit to the 3rd spot. There was a late race yellow with only 2 laps to go… We were still holding strong in the 3rd spot, but on the restart, the #45 car of Jeff VanOudenhoven nosed under neath us and the freight train went by… We struggled again on the outside lane and we ended up 8th overall when the dust settled…

Next week, once again a normal week with only racing on Thursday night at WIR….

See you there!!!
